7 Top Picks On How to Dress Not to Look Old

Have you heard?  We are looking younger. Wow!  Thirty is the new 40 and 40 is the new 50.  There is such an emphasis being put on ‘staying young’ that we are looking for new ways to beat father time – and it’s working, to some degree.

Although some of the ways to not look old or look younger include surgery and expensive procedures you can make a difference in how you look using less expensive and intrusive ways. Here are a few of my top picks:

1. Sunglasses can give you instant glamour if you choose the correct style.  The correct sunglasses suit your face shape and are in style.  To find the current trend check styles of Chanel, Gucci Dior, Fendi and Dolce & Gabbana.  You don’t have to buy designer shades to be stylish but you do need to choose a stylish shape. Be cautioned to stay with classic styles. Shades that are too trendy ( those shown to the far left) will have the opposite effect.

2. Eye Makeup – Heavy eyeliner, cracked liquid eyeliner, eyeliner on lower lashes, eyeliner that smudges, liner inside lower lashes; too bright eye shadow and glittery eye shadow will all make you appear older.

If you are still wearing your makeup (and using the same beauty products) as you did in your 20’s it’s time to make a change. Not only have beauty products improved, more importantly our skin is different. While heavy liner can look great on a 25 year- old on someone 55+,  heavy eyeliner looks harsh.

What can you do?  If you have bumpy eyelids, crow’s feet, or a hooded overhang use a thin line of liquid liner.  Stay away from shiny shadows and colour shadows and use beige, brown, or grey instead.  If you wear fake lashes stay away from a strip of fake lashes and instead try clumps of individual lashes that can be put into your natural lashes.

3.  Hands – Your nails are making an impression. Fake nails have been popular a few years; however, they have an aging effect; as does, extra long nails, ridged nails, discoloured nails and nail art (nail art because it’s teeny bopper). For more youthful nails keep them a medium length, a light colour and manicured.

Take care of your hands as well by moisturizing regularly and wearing rubber gloves when you have your hands in water.

4. Clothes: What is it about clothes that can be instantly aging?

  • Being too matchy – there are rules for dressing; however the rules change. For example, your handbag and shoes don’t have to match, you can wear white after Labor Day and prints can be worn together ( the right prints that is).
  • Wearing a designer look from head-to-toe and looking like you tried too hard.
  • Skirts that are too long; too short, too wide, too baggy worn with the wrong shoes
  • Styles that are too old: Full length fur coats,
  • Elastic waists and track suits
  • Styles that are too young: daisy dukes, college T-shirts, mini dresses and ripped jeans.

5. Shoes: Gym sneakers outside, penny loafers, boring classic pump, cowboy boots. You don’t have to compromise comfort for style, there are shoes that are comfortable as well as stylish. Shoes can make or break an outfit.

6. Accessories can change the look of your outfit from daytime to evening and they can also change it from youthful to aging. Here are a few examples:

  • Ankle bracelets
  • Body piercings
  • Toe rings
  • Multiple ear piercings
  • Dated jewelry, i.e. thin chains
  • Large hair clips
  • Photo handbags

7.  Something you might not have considered: Your scent – pay attention to what you’re wearing. How old is it? Don’t keep it longer than two years as it will age and will smell old – consequently; so will you. Don’t wear too much. Your scent shouldn’t arrive before you do or stay after you’ve left.

Why should you try to look younger? It’s a personal decision but my guess it you probably don’t want to look older.  To keep a competitive edge in your business or career a modern image is an asset. A dated image will convey a message of dated ways of thinking and operating.
